How Neurofeedback Works

Neurofeedback provides real-time information about brain activity, helping individuals learn how to regulate their physiological state through mindful practice. With consistent training, people become more aware of their ability to influence their brain activity, leading to better self-regulation in daily situations—whether it’s dealing with traffic, social interactions, or other stressful moments.

Stress naturally fluctuates, but neurofeedback trains the brain to maintain a balanced and optimal state, even through life’s ups and downs.

Understanding Brainwave Activity

An EEG (electroencephalography) is a digital recording of brainwave activity. A trained provider can compare this data to a normative database to generate a qEEG report or mini-q, identifying brainwave patterns that may be affecting focus, mood, or overall well-being.

Neurofeedback vs. Biofeedback

Neurofeedback, also known as neuro-training or neurotherapy, helps the brain optimize its activity through positive reinforcement. Unlike biofeedback, which involves conscious engagement—such as monitoring heart rate while practicing deep breathing—neurofeedback operates more subtly.

During a session, the client isn’t actively watching their brain activity. Instead, a practitioner monitors the EEG and adjusts training thresholds in real time. The client might be watching a video, playing a game, or relaxing with music while the system provides feedback through subtle shifts in sound or visual quality, reinforcing optimal brainwave patterns.

What Can Neurofeedback Help With?

Neurofeedback has been shown to be an effective alternative approach for improving various conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Traumatic stress (PTSD, panic, developmental trauma, military sexual trauma)
  • Migraines & headaches
  • Sleep issues
  • Traumatic brain injuries & concussions
  • Addiction recovery
  • Depression
  • Attention regulation (difficulty with focus, task-switching, and engagement)

It can also support breaking patterns of overthinking, improving emotional regulation, enhancing meditation, strengthening relationships, and increasing overall performance in work or daily life.

Our Approach at Mindful Restoration

Our goal is to help people see themselves—and the world around them—more clearly. Through neurofeedback, we offer a path to self-regulation, resilience, and a deeper sense of well-being.

What to Expect from a Neurofeedback Assessment

A neurofeedback assessment begins with placing small sensors on the scalp to measure brainwave activity. These sensors don’t alter the brain in any way—they simply read the natural frequencies it produces.

After gathering this data, a clinician reviews the results and collaborates with the client to identify potential areas for improvement. Assessments typically take about an hour, and at Mindful Restoration, we offer both mini-q and full qEEG assessments. The full qEEG includes a detailed brain map report.

Neuro-Training & Neuro-Therapy Sessions

Once target areas are identified, weekly one-hour neuro-training sessions help reinforce desired brainwave patterns. Just like exercise strengthens muscles, neurofeedback strengthens neural pathways, making optimal brain states easier to access.

Training sessions involve interactive activities, such as video games or visual/audio feedback, that encourage the brain to maintain balanced activity. Over time, this reinforcement helps create more stable and functional neural connections.

For those interested in a deeper integration, neuro-therapy combines neurofeedback with physiological psychotherapy techniques, helping clients connect their brain training to thoughts, behaviors, and emotional patterns
